I know it looks like snow but it´s not, it´s a whole desert of salt, about 10 billion tonnes of it they say. The area was once part of a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried, it left behind two modern lakes, and this salt desert. It measures about 12000 square kilometres and when you´re motoring through it really seems endless. It was a long and torturous trip to get to Uyuni (we´ll tell you about it when we see you) but we forgot the pain as we donned our shades (it´s very bright here) and stamped hard on the crunchy salt floor and wondered if this is where Mr Tayto gets his stash.
