PRISONS, PALACES, AND PEPPER PLANTS... THE CAMBODIA MEMOIRS

Spoiled with home comforts in Vietnam we came to understand pretty quickly that perhaps Cambodia was going to be a little different. Arrived Phnom Penh in the early afternoon and were taxied to Lake-side, the main backpacker haunt and incidentally the place to go if you're into filthy rooms and hassley tuk-tuk drivers! It did have a very good Indian restaurant though, and a mosque that looked straight out of Baghdad. We eventually found a decent room to call home for a few days and set off to let Phnom Penh work it's charms on us.

The 42 degree heat probably didn't work so well with our decision to explore the city on foot. The sweat ran down our brows as we desperately looked for the charm... we looked, we really did! Maybe we missed something...

A tuk-tuk was the transport of choice for the following day as we were driven off on a small sight-seeing and hopefully charm-finding tour.

First stop the Killing Fields. This is a horrific and quite sickening insight to the mass genocide of thousands of people during the Pol Pot regime in the 70's. It's not a pleasant sight to see but an important one if you make it to Cambodia. The site itself contains several mass graves of thousands of victims who were often bludgeoned to death during the regime to save on bullets. There is also a spine-chilling memorial monument in honour of these victims, it contains behind glass thousands of skulls of men, women, and children that were massacred at the site. Faced with all of this it just seemed so unimaginable that it all happened in my lifetime.

Next the S21 Prison museum. Many of the cells, exhibited as they would have been with just metal beds and a few torture implements, were absolutely terrifying. In another building were mugshots of thousands of victims of the regime. Spent about 2 hours inside and learned alot about the backround and brutality of the regime. Up to 2 million people are believed to have died during Pol Pot's reign.

Feeling a little depressed and exhausted at this point we finished our afternoon on a more light-hearted note at the Royal Palace. Many parts are closed to tourists as the King resides there but the parts we were allowed to venture into were only lovely. Gold and spires galore! Not quite as grand as the one in Bangkok but we loved relaxing in it's grounds for a while.

Over the course of a few days I must admit the city grew on me a bit. It definitely doesn't have the draw of other Asian cities but the river-side area has a few nice places to hang out. On our very brief return to the city we checked into a nice room in the river-side area and saw that maybe it does have some charm. I think I'll give Phnom Penh another chance the next time I'm in these parts. Don't think I'll be trying any of the deep fried insects next time though, upset my tummy they did!

A trip to Kampot for a few days of relaxation proved maybe a little too relaxing for our thrill-seeking selves. The guidebook described Kampot as a place to feel and not do and they weren't lying. By the end of our stint there all I felt was a bit bored! It did have a few great cafes and bars though. Epic Arts cafe in particular was worth a visit with lovely staff who are all hearing impaired(you may have to shout your order!). We also visited a pepper plantation while in the area which was quite interesting. Oh and we caught a rather splendid sunset in Kampot too.

NIE TAKI PHNOM PENH STRASZNY...

Kochani!

Miasto pelne zewszad nagabywujacych wlascicieli tuk-tukow, taksowek, rykszy, motocykli i wszelkich innych srodkow transportu, wizualnie dosc przygnebiajace, szarobure i blado wypadajace w porownaniu z reszta poludniowo-wschodnio azjatyckich metropolii, ma jednak kilka perelek w zanadrzu. Tutaj odnalezlismy maciupenka restauracje indyjska, w ktorej stolowalismy sie niemalze rytualnie trzy razy dziennie zaspokajajac nasza tesknote za wegetarianskimi delicjami made in India. Tutaj tez pomimo nieznosnego 42-stopniowego upalu nacieszylismy oczy eleganckim Palacem Krolewskim. Kompleks dostojny i harmonijnie rozplanowany. Taka subtelniejsza i bardziej gustowna wersja tego z Bangkoku.

Tutaj tez zakosztowalismy w wielu owocach, z ktorymi nie mielismy dotad do czynienia. Sympatycznie wygladajace kwasne siostry liczi - rambutany, zielone "ufo-podobne" owoce lotosu no i drazniace nos duriany.

Tutaj wreszcie oddalismy czesc ofiarom rezimu Pol Pota sprzed zaledwie trzech dekad. Dla tych wlasnie szokujacych wydarzen do Phnom Penh powinien zawitac KAZDY podrozujacy do Azji Pd-Wsch. Pola smierci jak i koszmarne wiezienie S-21 kryja w sobie echa horroru, ktory wymordowal 1/4ta owczesnego spoleczenstwa Kambodzy! Tragiczna pamiatka najmroczniejszych dni w historii Pd-Wsch. Emocjonalnie trudny ale jakze istotny dzien by oddac hold niewinnym ofiarom niewybaczalnej i niewyobrazalnej masakry ludobojstwa z czasow odrazajacego Pol Pota.

******

Na nastepnych kilka dni przenosimy sie na poludnie kraju do zaspanej miescinki zwanej Kampot. Apogeum nicnierobienia i wypoczynkowy mini maraton.

Zakupy kulinarne a i owszem zostaly poczynione...

Jestescie z nami rjebjaty?

SCOOTERS, SNAKES & BOXSETS... BIDDING FAREWELL TO VIETNAM FROM SAIGON

With Hanoi officially taking the top spot on the favourite city since leaving home list, Saigon had alot to live up to. I'm sure the Saigonians would be delighted to hear that Saigon didn't come in too far down the list either.
Saigon is a bigger city than Hanoi and this immediately comes across and, though I never thought it possible, it's even more difficult to cross the street there. We were very close to asking some of the locals to hold our hands. the safe cross code certainly wont save you here!

As is standard throughout most of Vietnam we found ourselves some really great value accommodation run by a very cute older couple who couldn't do enough for us.

Day one saw us chasing world religions again, taking in a Hindu temple, a mosque, and a cathedral in just a few hours. A few Bia Hoi ended up the days proceedings nicely, in the company of Julie and Colin whom we'd bumped into on just about every stop in Vietnam but not really met til now. Some laugh!! The Bia Hoi in Saigon is slightly more expensive than Hanoi but at roughly 18cent a pop we didn't get too upset.

Another day brought us a few hours out of the city to the Mehkong Delta where we visited a coconut candy factory, held a 2 metre python like we'd done it all our lives, drank some rice wine, listened to some rather ear-offensive traditional music, and hopped from boat to boat along the vast network of beautiful canals. Great tour! When it comes to tourism it has to be said the Vietnamese have it down for the most part. They're not a bit shy about charging for it though!
As we have a blog follower who's got a bit of a snake phobia you can see the python pic by just clicking on this link:

Much of the remainder of our time we spent on a busy little street called Bien Vu. Shopping, drinking, eating, internet, TV-watching, and reading could all be pursued here with ease. We also partook in the age old tradition of DVD piracy, spending a good deal of our budget on various TV boxsets and movies. We'll be very busy with them when we're back which is probably a good thing since we won't much cash for socialising.

As gorgeous as the coutryside is in Vietnam, I think it's the cities I'll miss the most.

9 MILIONOW MOTOCYKLI W... SAJGONIE...

Inny swiat! Ukochalismy sobie szczegolnie takie jedno miejsce na ulicy Bui Vien do ktorego wracalismy i z ktorego wychodzilismy zawsze z pelnymi usmiechami na naszych spieczonych sloncem licach. A to pamiatkowe zdjecie z jego przeurocza wlascicielka.

Bedac w Ho Chi Min City "szarpnelismy sie" takze na jednodniowa wyprawe wzdluz rzeki Mekong, wsrod palm, krzewow, drzew mango i tysiecy kwiatow lotosu.

http://picasaweb.google.com/LESPRZEM/SAIGON#5333781604620496418/

Pozdrawiam slonecznie.

JUZ ZA MOMENCIK JUZ ZA CHWILENKE...

Stories from Cambodia coming up soon!

Opowiesci z Kambodzy juz wkrotce!
